Motivation for Christian Writers
When it comes to motivation for Christian writers, most like to think that God empowers their creative efforts. That’s true. of course. But the real question is how he does that.
Personally, I don’t believe he is an external force, like a Greek Muse. The Bible says, “Christ in you, hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). The Holy Spirit does not hover over Christians, but indwells us. 1 Corinthians 3:16 says, “Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
With that biblical concept in mind, Christian writers need to think about how the Holy Spirit interacts with our human spirit in the writing process. My video addresses that in the context of motivation. What motivates you? Is it inner or outer factors? The video demonstrates how you can understand your God-given inner factors.
Appropriate the power of the Holy Spirit in Your Writing
Here are some tips:
- Be settled in your heart and mind that you are doing God’s work as a writer. Your job is to inform, educate and inspire. If you have the conviction you are doing that, you can overcome the various obstacles that you will face as a writer.
- Make prayer a part of your preparation. It is good to pray just before you begin to write each day, but make prayer a part of your entire process. When I was a student at Wheaton Graduate School and had a young family, we prayed over the groceries when we brought them into our home. We thanked God as we prepared meals. We said grace at each meal. We were expressing thankfulness and seeking God’s blessing at each step. The same idea goes for each step of the writing process.
- Recognize that your writing is fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). Some self-effacing Christian writers show false humility by saying they don’t care if their books sells. They should care since it shows others value their work. God wants your book to be widely read if it glorifies him! Plus, if you offer your book for free, it will get lost in the millions of free books already available. Book distribution statistics are a mirror of God’s blessing.
God empowers your creative efforts. How? God created you and he uses the brain and creative powers he gave you. They work in concert with the Holy Spirit. Likewise, book distribution systems are a part of God’s creation, just like everything else. Christian writers need to use that resource too. We need to call upon God, from idea to research–from writing to editing–from book design and covers to book marketing–at every stage of our work.
